Okay, I've been telling you that I would put some pictures of the old and new Captain Americas up here so that you could compare the visual rhetoric of the two. Now remember, there is a lot to the rhetoric of these two pictures besides just the costumes, but take a look at them: what do you think that each suggests about

Now, the stories themselves have quite a rhetorical slant as well--y'know, one was frozen in time to be revived by a future generation, the second was the first one's sidekick and spent some time brainwashed and working for the USSR--but just look at the images themselves right now.

I think it's rather interesting that the new Cap has a gun and a knife, while the old cap just carried around a shield. New Cap has Defense and Offense. He doesn't seem as humble as the old Cap either. But then again losing an arm and being brainwashed has its disadvantages.

I think the things I noticed right off was that the first picture is more about a pride in our country. He feels very strong emotionally and he looks very much like a leader or figurhead. Also the colors are all defined and firm. The wings feel like a statement of freedom. The pedestal is a way of saying we are above others. In the second one, he feels much more agressive. The lines are blurred and feels rushed. There is a lot of movement but you dont have any idea what the target is. Is he now attacking his own viewers? It doest feel any where near as strong and positive. You cant see his feet. He isnt grounded at all. Interesting. Thanks. Sherrie Anderson
